Consolidated Construction did an excellent job with an exterior project on my home. The project included removal/replacement of trim, painting the trim including windows of the entire home, painting porch ceilings and installing new fans, as well as the removal/replacement of front and back porch flooring from wood to composite. Highly recommend!

Common questions and tips from our work with Columbia customers.
- How do I know if my exterior trim is rotted?
- Press a screwdriver gently into the wood around window sills, door frames and the bottom of corner boards. Soft spots, crumbling, dark staining and paint that keeps peeling in one place all point to rot. Check the areas that stay wet longest, like joints and surfaces close to the ground. Replacing the bad section early is simpler than repairing the framing behind it later.
- Should I repair or replace an old wood fence?
- Look at the posts first, since they carry the whole fence. If only a few pickets or rails are damaged and the posts are solid, a repair usually makes sense. If several posts lean, wobble or have gone soft at the ground line, replacing that run is often the more sensible choice. The age of the remaining boards and how much of the fence matches also play a part.
Tip
Seal Every Cut End on New Exterior Trim
Wood takes on water fastest through its end grain, so the cut ends of trim boards are the weak point. Prime them before installation, not only the faces you can see. Once the trim is up, caulk the joints where it meets siding or masonry, then paint. Check those joints from time to time, because a small open gap lets rain sit behind the board.
